2005 HIGHLIGHTS
- Charity in Action began in September 2005 as a grass-roots response to Hurricane Katrina.
- We rapidly mobilized donors, partners and volunteers, and worked through our contact in the U.S. Military on location in coastal Mississippi to coordinate our work with FEMA, the Red Cross, and the Salvation Army.
- Within days we sent a tractor-trailer loaded with food and emergency supplies for hurricane victims living in shelters, and a group of eight volunteers traveled to Gulfport, MS to establish a food distribution line.
- In the weeks that followed, we delivered three more tractor-trailers loaded with needed goods to Mississippi shelters, schools and aid distribution centers. A second group of volunteers went to install donated computers in the schools.
- We purchased teacher desks, trashcans, atomic clocks, overhead projectors and carts, library books, and school supplies for the Pass Christian School District; we also transported donated computers, library furniture, student desks, books, filled backpacks, and an outdoor enclosure for the schools.
- We purchased blankets, pots and pans, and utensils for the Hancock County Aid Distribution Center, as well as transporting donated refrigerators, cleaning supplies and household items.
- Some of our partners donated books and encyclopedias directly to the Pass Christian schools.
- In 2005 Charity in Action operated under the fiscal sponsorship of the Bryn Athyn Church. Financial contributions for Charity in Action totaled over $230,000, and donated goods were valued at over $93,000.
- Over 350 people joined our mailing list, and more than 100 volunteers worked on sorting, packing, purchasing, and fundraising for us.
